Something terrifying is going on and I'm struggling to grasp the overall concept. It involves the Cleveland Cavaliers and I'm starting to myself intrigued with a potential Cinderella team. Now I know what you're saying and even I WILL ADMIT I'M A LITTLE INSANE. Yes, it's only one game and yes...it was against the Charlotte Hornets (shout out Hornets fans I still love you). BUT...is there something happening in Cleveland?
We've talked about it plenty here throughout the course of the offseason. This was a massive year for the Cavaliers organization, specifically when talking about their young backcourt duo of Darius Garland and Collin Sexton. Both of the players are former lottery selections, and the Cavaliers are hoping the two can become dangerous complementary pieces for the long-term future. Think of what the Portland Trail Blazers did when they drafted CJ McCollum to play alongside Damian Lilliard. Now I'm not saying that these two players could become as dangerous as the combo in Portland...but there's still TREMENDOUS upside with both of these players. Sexton is officially entering his third season in the league and has impressed the last two years during the second half of the season. Garland was a rookie last year but had a number of injury setbacks, making him a potential sophomore breakout candidate.
Last night, Garland and Sexton would lead the Cavaliers to a big opening night victory. Darius Garland would finish with 22 points (7/13 FG), 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Collin Sexton would also have a big night, finishing with 27 points (9/16 FG), and 5 assists. The two would combine for only 4 turnovers the entire game as well. It's only one game, but Cleveland Cavaliers fans all of a sudden have something to get excited about with this young backcourt for the rest of the year.
