Sales Pitch
A mountain of a presence in the paint with a developing outside game and better than advertised athleticism.
Background
It was another star-filled recruiting class for the Duke Blue Devils this year and the man in the middle was a monstrous presence. Freshman big man Vernon Carey Jr was one of the most impressive players this year in Duke's talented incoming class, frequently dominating opponents with his mountain-like size at 6'10" 270 pounds. A former two-time Mr. Basketball for the state of Florida, Carey jumps off of the tape with his size, strength, and sneaky athleticism.

Positives

INSIDE SCORING

  • A monster of a presence inside the paint. Demonstrates a great combination of footwork and soft touch around the basket. Good feel for the defense in his game and gets to the foul line frequently.

REBOUNDING

  • Talented rebounding weapon on both sides of the ball. Does a great job of reading the ball in-flight and creating positioning with his strength. Stays active on the glass. Fights for extra possessions and makes opposing bigs work relentlessly.

OFFENSIVE POTENTIAL

  • Shows an intriguing skill set as a potential inside-out threat at the NBA level. Bit of an old school presence, especially when it comes to his ability as a post-up player. Ranked in the 88th percentile (via Synergy) when it came to post-up offense.
Negatives

DEFENSIVE VERSATILITY

  • Not necessarily a defensive anchor that some NBA teams might hope for. Will raise some questions in regard to his switchability. Impressive athleticism and lateral quickness for a player of his size but struggles in P&R coverages.

DECISION MAKING

  • Inconsistent when it comes to passing ability. Needs to see the floor better and vision is lacking. Bit of a tunnel vision when he's fed in the post.

ROLE

  • NBA Front offices will have to question Carey's role moving forward. If his passing and outside shooting comes along, he could provide some serious sleeper appeal.
Overall
When you look at this year's big man class, there's a serious amount of intrigue in a number of prospects. Duke freshman center Vernon Carey Jr is a monstrous threat inside the paint who offers an enticing amount of upside in this year's class. Carey fits the mold of an old school type of NBA big man, which could draw plenty of questions about how his game should translate to the modern NBA. At 6'10" 265 and with great footwork, it's a good bet that some NBA organization will take their chances on developing an imposing offensive threat like Vernon Carey Jr.
