Sales Pitch
Gritty big man who does a bit of everything and could become a steal if he lands with the right fit.
Background
Over the last couple of years, it was hard to watch Michigan State without coming away impressed by the play and intensity that big man Xavier Tillman Sr displayed. Tillman enjoyed a successful three-year career at Michigan State and was an absolute force down low with his contagious energy. Although he's undersized (6'8") for a prototypical big man in the NBA, Tillman offers serious appeal due to his knack for making winning plays and his potential to contribute from day one.

Positives

FEEL FOR THE GAME

  • Shows fantastic playmaking ability for a big man. Makes quick, decisive reads like a surgical NFL quarterback. Underrated ball-handler as well. If his outside shooting comes along, could make him a P&R dream in the right system.

DEFENSE

  • A strong intelligent defender who can be the voice of a defense. Argument to be made that he's the best off-ball defender out of big men in this class. Seems to be in the right positon constantly. Shows fantastic technique when defending the post and alters shots constantly. Ranked in the 87th percentile (via Synergy) as a defender overall.

FINISHING

  • Does a great job of finishing in the interior with either hand. Knows how to properly use his strength and frame to get positioning. Ranked in 91st percentile (via Synergy) when finishing around the basket and posted a 68.1 FG%.
Negatives

SIZE

  • In theory, he's undersized for a prototypical big man. But, teams could throw that out of the window with his potential in a smaller line-up.

EXPLOSIVENESS

  • Not a very explosive player in a vertical sense. Has to alter his shot a lot around the rim because of it. Improving his outside shot could go a long way towards improving his offensive game and "hiding" this.

FOUL PRONE

  • Has a history of going for shot fakes and has been prone to foul trouble during his time at Michigan State. Will need to become a more patient defender at the NBA level.
Overall
It doesn't take long on tape to see that Michigan State big man Xavier Tillman Sr has enticing tools for the NBA. An impactful force on both sides of the ball, there's an argument to be made that Tillman is one of the best off-ball defensive big men in this year's class. Tillman offers an extreme amount of steal appeal. If Tillman can develop a respectable outside shot, some NBA team will find themselves getting extreme value come draft night.
